BBC NEWS | Business | Firms 'banned' from Iraq mobile bids

BBC NEWS | Business | Firms 'banned' from Iraq mobile bids: "Rules drawn up for mobile phone licences in Iraq by the US authorities in Iraq could bar many of Europe's biggest telecoms companies - and almost all those in the Middle East - from bidding.
The rules - issued by the coalition authorities ahead of a bidders' conference in Jordan on Thursday - ban governments from 'directly or indirectly own(ing) more than 5% of any single bidding company or single company in consortia'. "

Economic Imperialism, with special rules and everything.

Reuters AlertNet - U.S. troops in Iraq powerless against bomb attacks

Reuters AlertNet - U.S. troops in Iraq powerless against bomb attacks: "'We have been attacked by subversive elements and I believe that these subversive elements are young males that can be paid a lot of money and receive weapons from former Baathists and former regime loyalists,' Teeples said.
'It is inviting for them to set up an explosive device or to shoot an RPG at a coalition force because they are going to get paid a great deal of money for doing it.'
Teeples said young men hard up for cash and pro-Saddam guerrillas with military training were behind the bloodshed."

Aaah, the love of money. Someone noticed this causes problems way back in the day.

News 8 Austin | 24 Hour Local News | HEADLINES | Bush has busy Crawford vacation schedule: "Fundraisers will help will fill President Bush's schedule during his month-long working vacation at his ranch near Crawford.
In August, Bush will mix public policy events with six fund-raisers -- in Colorado, California, Oregon, Washington and Minnesota.
The practice allows the administration, in certain cases, to bill taxpayers for half the travel costs of the political activity."

My lord. This has to be a joke. This must be very inspiring to those led by our commander-in-chief.

Yahoo! News - Defense Spending Driving U.S. Economy

Yahoo! News - Defense Spending Driving U.S. Economy: "'Growth in the second quarter was boosted by federal defense spending, by business investment in plant and equipment, and by consumer spending,' Commerce noted.
Spending on defense, much of it to support the war in Iraq (news - web sites), shot up at a 44.1 percent rate -- the strongest since 110 percent in the third quarter of 1951 -- after falling 3.3 percent in the first three months of the year. "

Lots of numbers about the U.S. economy. No mention of record debt, but that won't be a problem for many years, so it can safely be ignored.

Letter to President Clinton on Iraq

Letter to President Clinton on Iraq: "Even if full inspections were eventually to resume, which now seems highly unlikely, experience has shown that it is difficult if not impossible to monitor Iraq?s chemical and biological weapons production. The lengthy period during which the inspectors will have been unable to enter many Iraqi facilities has made it even less likely that they will be able to uncover all of Saddam?s secrets. As a result, in the not-too-distant future we will be unable to determine with any reasonable level of confidence whether Iraq does or does not possess such weapons."

Oh my, hindsight is quite a thing, eh?

CNN.com - Bush wants marriage reserved for heterosexuals - Jul. 30, 2003: "Bush has long opposed gay marriage but as recently as earlier this month had said that a constitutional ban on gay marriage proposed in the House might not be needed despite a Supreme Court decision that some conservatives think opens the door to legalizing same-sex marriages. As White House officials try to control the latest fallout over President Bush's flawed suggestion in the State of the Union address that Iraq was buying nuclear bomb materials, there's growing talk by insiders that National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice may take the blame and resign. For most insiders, it's inconceivable that Rice, touted as a future secretary of state, California governor, and even vice president, would go, but the latest revelations that her shop and deputy Stephen Hadley mishandled CIA warnings have put the NSC in the bull's eye of controversy.
Personally I'd rather see Cheney take the fall than Rice, but since he's the one actually running the show, I doubt that will happen.

How cow, did you see this?

Seems to work o.k.

Okey dokey.

So we got that straightened out. This particular blog came about because of a Google marketing promotion with Blogger, whom they acquired sometime back.

Google's new 'pop-up blocking' toolbar includes a little blogging button, so then I made a new account, and here we are. The button is supposed to make it easy to blog the page you are currently reading. I would like to make it a matter of record that I dislike the word 'blog' and all its siblings, but they are here for the foreseeable future, and thus, I use them continuously. Bloggety, blog, blog.

Because of the nature of the beast, this will mainly be links to all the stuff I finish reading. It's the background noise that I filter for my 'real' site, Quantum Philosophy.net. There's a crapload of it, but I like to spend a bit more time exploring things on the other page. Also, I'm curious to see how this affects traffic.

That's the idea, let's see how things work out.
Check, check. 123.

This is another source.

Hmmm, now I'm trying to figure out how to change my change. ...
